The metropolitan population is 5,312,123 (2019). Sydneysiders are commonly known as "Sydneysiders" in English. Sydney is the first European settlement and penal colony in Australia. It was established in Sydney Bay in 1788 by Arthur Phillip, captain of the British First Fleet.[4][5] Sydney was built around Port Jackson (including Sydney Harbour) and was once known as the "Harbour City". It is Australia's largest financial center and a major international tourist destination, famous for its beaches, opera house and harbour bridge.
