The Northern Territory (NT), also known as Northern Australia, is an autonomous territory of Australia, located in the center of the northern part of the continent, with the Timor Sea, Arafura Sea and Gulf of Carpentaria to the north, Western Australia to the west, South Australia to the south, and Queensland to the east. It covers an area of about 1,420,968 square kilometers, accounting for about 17.5% of the total area of the Australian continent, with a coastline of about 6,200 kilometers and a total population of more than 240,000 (2007). The capital Darwin, formerly known as Palmerston; renamed Darwin in 1911, is one of the excellent ports in northern Australia, with a population of 145,916 (2016).
