The Great Barrier Reef (English: Great Barrier Reef) is the world's largest and longest coral reef group[2][3]. It is located on the northeast coast of Australia in the South Pacific. It runs through the Coral Sea off the northeastern coast of Queensland, Australia, from the Torres Strait in the north to the south of the Tropic of Capricorn (approximately 10°S to 24°S), stretching for a total of about 2,600 kilometers and 161 kilometers at its widest point. There are about 2,900 independent reefs[4] and 900 large and small islands distributed over an area of about 344,400 square kilometers[5][6]. The natural landscape is very unique. The southern end of the Great Barrier Reef is 241 kilometers away from the coast at its farthest, while the northern end is closer, with the closest point only 16 kilometers from the coast. At low tide, some coral reefs emerge from the water to form coral islands. There is an extremely convenient sea route between the reef group and the coast. When the weather is calm, when cruise ships pass through here, the endless colorful and diverse coral scenery under the ship becomes the best underwater wonder that attracts tourists from all over the world to come and watch.
The Great Barrier Reef is made up of billions of tiny coral polyps[7] and is the largest structure ever built by living organisms. It can be seen from outer space[8]. Because of its rich biodiversity, it was listed as a World Heritage Site in 1981[2][3] and was selected by CNN as one of the Seven Wonders of the World[9].
